Dillon of this town, died Saturday, December 6, in the 40th year of his life. Completing his preliminary education at the Euphradian Institute, he studied at Washington and Lee University. He was with the Seaboard Air Line, the Albemarle Steam Navigation Co., and the Pretlow Peanut Company here for several years, and went overseas on America’s entry into the World War as a Sergeant in the headquarters company of the 319 Infantry, 80th Division, winning an honorable record in that conflict. Nine years ago he married Miss Frances Falkner of Corinth, Miss., who survives him with two children, Elizabeth Ann and William Dillon, Jr. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. E.A. Dillon; by a sister, Miss Bessie Dillon, and by a number of other relatives here and many friends. He was a member of Franklin Lodge No. 151 A.F. & A.M., and of Southampton Post 73, the American Legion. Funeral services were held from the Dillon home in South High Street Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. J. Sutherland- Watt, chaplain of the local Legion post. Mrs. J.S. Morgan of Suffolk sang "Sometime We’ll Understand," and Mrs. F.E. Howell and Mrs. H.G. Cobb sang "Abide with Me," J. Edgar Weede playing. Interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the active pallbearers being: Wayland Jones, W.T. Pace, Jr., J.J. Pace, W.R. Atkinson, W. Curtis Byrd, Leland Fleetwood, Geo. R. Hayes and G.G. McKann. Members of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion acted as honorary bearers, a large number of Masons from several neighboring lodges being present for the Masonic rites conducted at the grave.
