All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JUNIUS PAUL DERBY Junius Paul Derby, 68, for many years a well known farmer of Southampton County, died Friday, August 21, at Veterans Facility at Kecoughtan, he having served the U.S. Government in early manhood. He was the son of the late Junius N. and Olive Worrell Derby of Riddicksville, N.C. His wife, who died in 1939, was Miss Nannie B. Miles. Of this union two daughters, Mrs. C.T. Derby of Gates, N.C., and Mrs. G.H. Duck of Phoebus, five sons, Rev. Luther J. and W. Carson Derby of Hampton, Rev. C. Edwards Derby of Montvale, Virgil L. Derby of Franklin and J.P. Derby, Jr. of Petersburg and nine grandchildren survive, and a number of other relatives who were very attentive to him during his illness. Funeral services were conducted at New Hope M.E. Church Sunday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. L.G. Tinnell, assisted by Rev. B.B. Bland of Franklin and Rev. Roy Jarratt of Petersburg. The choir sang "How Firm a Foundation" and "Faith of Our Fathers." Burial was in the family cemetery on the farm of L.M. Miles near the church. Active pallbearers were Dr. B.A. Pope, V.K. Daughtrey, S.S. and K.R. Bishop, J.W. and L.L. Bryant. Honorary pallbearers were a number of men of the county who were friends of Mr. Derby. The casket was covered with the U.S. flag. The lovely flowers and large crowd was a tribute to the beautiful Christian life of the deceased.
