A native of Berkley, Va., her parents were Rev. J.A. and Mrs. Bettie Williams Speight. She was a graduate of Ryland Institute in Berkley. In April 1896 she married Mr. Drake and came to the house at Sunbeam where she spent the rest of her life. She made a wonderful mother for the three children, Jennie Sue Drake Bryant, Linwood Crumpler Drake of Sunbeam and Mrs. Elsie Drake Alexander of Sandston, Va.; eight grandchildren, Franklin Bryant, L.C. Jr., and Walter Franklin Drake, Tunstall, Linwood, Edwin and Barbara Alexander and Frances Alexander; a nephew, Bryan Peele, a niece, Mrs. Ida Peele Reel. Mrs. Drake was much beloved in her community, being a useful and capable friend and neighbor ever much concerned about the comfort of others, her motto being "Others Lord, Yes, Others, and None of Self for Me." Being reared by pious parents, she was most at home in Christian work, being one of the founders of the Sunbeam Baptist Church. She gave without stint of her time and talent to all organizations of that body as long as health permitted. It was fitting that the last rites were held there on Friday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. W.C. Hughes, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin and Rev. C.P. Cleveland of Lynchburg. The choir with Mrs. J.T. Bryant at the piano sang "Shall We Gather At the River." Mr. Cleveland sang "No Night There." Mr. Cleveland and Mrs. Bryant sang "Beyond the Sunset." The pallbearers were the six grandsons, the honorary bearers were friends of the family. The casket was covered with a pall of ascension lilies, white carnations, ferns and rosebuds. There were many other lovely floral pieces and a large gathering of relatives and friends who came to pay the last tribute of respect to one who so richly deserved every flower given and every word spoken. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Clara (SPEIGHT; Mrs. Emmett F.)
