All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HERBERT LEE DRAKE Herbert Lee Drake of Boykins died suddenly at the home of Richard Ricks Tuesday afternoon at about 2:05 o’clock. Mr. Drake had taken a peanut buyer over to his barn to look at his peanuts. After leaving the barn he was taken suddenly ill and was carried to the nearest home, that of Mr. Ricks, his death occurring a few minutes afterwards. Mr. Drake was the son of the late Sam and Caroline Drake of Boykins community and was in his fifty-third year. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nonie Smith Drake; three sons, Hugh, Roy Lee and Roger; two brothers, Luther and Abe Drake, all of Boykins; one sister Mrs. Jim Drake of Newsoms, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from his home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. F.B. Handley of Boykins Baptist Church. During the services special music was furnished by the choir of the Baptist Church. The active pallbearers were: W.F. McKinstry, T.H. Porter, J.P. Johnson, Herbert Britt, F.R. Stephens, R.E. Ferguson, W.H. Powell and W.E. Spiers, interment being made in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Boykins High School Senior Class, of which the deceased’s son, Roy Lee, is a member. Mr. Drake was a faithful member of the Boykins Baptist Church, of the Baracca Class of that Church and a regular attendant at Sunday school. He was a kind husband and father and honest in his dealings with his fellowmen.
