Drake, well-known resident of the Newsoms community, died at her home Tuesday afternoon after an illness of seven years. She was the daughter of the late Ben and Mrs. Martha Barrett Drake* of Southampton County. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters; Mrs. J.L. Drake and Mrs. P.G. Ferguson of Newsoms and Mrs. Willie M. Story of Murfreesboro; four sons, J.F. Drake and Irving and Guy Drake of Newsoms and Leroy R. Drake of Portsmouth. Funeral services were held at the grave in the family cemetery near Newsoms Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. C.F. Moseley. Active pallbearers were Jimmie Drake, Linwood Drake, R.E. Vick, George Hill, Jesse Story, Luther Gray. Lula Elma* (GRAY; Mrs. Walter F.) Lula Elma was the daughter of Benjamin James GRAY and Martha N. BARRETT. (Joe H. Drake, citing Carl Thorpe; Joe continues,) 1870 census shows Lula as the daughter and in the household of Ben Gray. Her middle name appears variously Ema/Elma/Elmer. D.Cert. 2463 (Newsoms #1) Cemetery site not known (May 2023) to the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project. Her husband (11 Apr 1865 - 16 May 1939) is also buried there. The family appears in the 1920 Census - Newsoms Dist., Southampton Co. - on the Sands-Statesville Rd. (General Farm #66) Southampton Co. Marriage Book 5 (1882-86), p. 548, gives: Walter F. {Franklin} Drake, 21, single, Farmer, b. & res. Southampton, son of Jno. H. & Martha Drake, Lula E. Gray, 20, single, b. & res. Southampton, daughter of B.J. & Martha R. Gray, m. 16 Feb 1886, Southampton (no minister's return given); White; m.license 15 Feb 1886 (clerk J.B. Prince).
