Almost his entire life was spent on the farm which was his birthplace and which he left as a home for his sister. He was not what the world would call a prominent figure in local and county affairs, but he was one who always tried hard to meet all responsibilities devolving upon him. He was the head of the home for more than twenty years, caring for both father and mother during their declining years at the time when they were helpless through the infirmities of age. The mutual devotion of his sister, Rosa, and himself was a beautiful relation throughout their home keeping on the parental homestead. In his business relations Neely Drake was careful not to become involved unduly and was a thrifty and frugal manager, prompt to meet his obligations and careful to provide things honorable in the sight of all men. As a neighbor and friend he had a large circle of associates. His spirit of helpfulness and service was very noticeable, and many are the individuals who can testify to his good judgment, sound business practices and his helpful and accommodating spirit. He leaves two sisters and three brothers to mourn his death. It can well be said of Neely Drake that "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say ‘this was a man’.
