VERNON LEAHMAN DRAKE

   Funeral services for Vernon Leahman Drake, 65, who died Sunday, August 12 
at 6:10 p.m. at the Medical College Hospital, Richmond, after an illness of 
several months, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the H.M. 
Purviance Memorial Funeral Chapel, Boykins, with Rev. William Ferguson, pastor 
of the Boykins Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Beechwood 
Cemetery, Boykins. 

   Mr. Drake was the husband of Mrs. Russell Ward Drake and the son of the late 
John H. and Mrs. Josephine Bishop Drake. A lifelong resident of Southampton 
county, he was an insurance agent. 

   In addition to his wife, he is survived by three brothers, Emmett W. Drake 
of Franklin, John Carroll Drake of Suffolk and Elliott Drake of California; 
four sisters, Mrs. Luther Maddrey of Conway, N.C., Mrs. J.L. Porter of Newsoms, 
Mrs. Sam Whitfield of Handsom and Mrs. Louis Boone of Portsmouth and a number 
of nieces and nephews. 

   Active pallbearers were James Rock, C.B. Rock, Jr., Buck Blowe, Roland 
Baker, Walter Bishop, L.V. Maddrey and Dr. J.M. Bland. Friends of the family 
served as honorary pallbearers.
