DARDEN Mrs. Sydney Darden died at the home of her father, J.W. Bain, "Oak Grove," in the Berlin community Friday, May 24th. Mrs. Darden had made her home with her father since the death of her husband on May 30, 1927. She had been a great sufferer for the past three years from sinus trouble, and bore her sufferings which were intense during the last two months of her life with patience and fortitude. She was the youngest daughter of J.W. Bain and the late Mrs. Mattie Bristow Bain and besides her father she leaves to mourn their loss three sisters, Mrs. B.B. Herbert of Norfolk, Mrs. S.A. Whitley of Smithfield, Miss Virgie Bain at "Oak Grove," besides Miss Lou Kitchen, who is a member of the immediate family at "Oak Grove;" one brother, W.T. Bain of Wakefield; four nieces and three nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon May 25, at 2:30 o'clock from the Bain home by the Rev. G.C. Smith of Petersburg, a former pastor and friend of the Bain family, and Rev. W.M. Hall, pastor of Millfield Baptist Church of which Mrs. Darden was a member, assisted by Rev. Kenneth E. Burke of Courtland and Rev. C.E. Gerringer of Wakefield. The choir sang "Safe In The Arms of Jesus" and Rev. Mr. Smith made fitting remarks on the life of Mrs. Darden and read her favorite and requested scripture. Prayer was offered by Rev. Kenneth E. Burke and the choir sang "Sometime We'll Understand." There was a large attendance and many floral offerings as an expression of love and friendship for the deceased. The casket was covered with clusters of white lilies. The body bearers were: B.B. Herbert, S.A. Whitley, Guy Bain, Johnnie Bain, E.V. Stephenson, B.F. Boothe, Jr. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. E.M. Babb, Garland Davis, Roy Stephenson, Russell Owen, Hugh Williams, Otis Joyner, Carl Beale, Irvin Williams, Holt Brantley, Charlie Sadler, T.O. Camp and Willie Laine.
