DARDEN Junius Willard Darden, one of Franklin’s most highly esteemed citizens, died in Sarah Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Tuesday, September 9, after a severe illness of several weeks from an acute liver trouble. He was in his thirty- seventh year, was a native of Nansemond County, but had been a resident of Franklin for a number of years, and at the time of his death was engaged in the livery business here. He was a good citizen and an uptight and conscientious young man, living the quiet and useful life of a faithful Christian, and was admired and respected by everyone in our town and community. We have rarely seen a larger gathering of people than that which filled the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.L. McCutcheon, assisted by Rev. Jesse McCarter, Mr. McCutcheon making an unusually tender and appropriate talk on the life of the deceased. Large delegations from the Odd Fellows and Woodmen attended the funeral. The pallbearers were Dr. Geo. W. Hayes, W.H. Lankford, Dr. Jno. Mills Powell, G.E. Johnson, J.J. Bristow, E.L. Beale, R.E.L. Watkins, Geo O. Watkins. The deceased is survived by his widow, who was Miss Willie Lenora Darden, the daughter of Robert Darden of this community, and by one son, Lloyd A. Darden; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Jane Darden of Nansemond County, and the following sisters and brothers; J.W.H. Darden of Branchville, Mrs. T.A. Eure of Franklin, Mrs. R.L. Harper and Mrs. J.E. Coggin of Raleigh, W.M. Darden of Franklin, Dr. St. C. Darden of Branchville, and Miss Mabel Darden of Raleigh. The News extends its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in their great sorrow.
