Mr. Darden, a Branchville native, owned Darden & Son General Merchandise Store. He was a member of Branchville Ruritan Club; American Legion Post 276; and Branchville Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Iris Martin Darden; five daughters, Laneau D. Collins of San Clemente, Calif., Rebecca D. Benefield of New Orleans, James D. Stephenson of Wakefield, Cynthia D. Britt of Severn, N.C., and Vivian D. Fields of Roanoke; a son, John T. Darden Jr. of Boykins; and 13 grandchildren. A graveside service was conducted Saturday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas Caulkins. McDowell Funeral Home handled arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Boykins Volunteer Rescue Squad.
