COLGATE W. DARDEN Mrs. Colgate W. Darden of Franklin died Tuesday night at the Hay-Ven Sanitarium, Mount Pocono, Penn., where she had been for about three weeks for a dietary course of treatment. Mrs. Darden was before her marriage Miss Katherine Pretlow, daughter of the late Joshua Pretlow and Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Butler Pretlow, a family for many years prominent throughout this part of Virginia. She was 66 years of age and was educated at the Winchester Female Seminary, an Episcopal school in Northern Virginia. She was born at the Darden home on the Courtland-Franklin highway where she had spent all of her life with the exception of a few years residence in this town. In October, 1895, she was married to Colgate W. Darden, well-known Franklin citizen and banker, and besides her husband is survived by three children, Congressman Colgate W. Darden, Jr., representative from the Second Virginia District: Mrs. Harvey L. Linsay of Norfolk and Pretlow Darden of Norfolk; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. John D. Abbitt and Miss Mary Denson Pretlow of Norfolk and Mrs. William T. Woodley of Raleigh, besides a large family connection. Mrs. Darden was a lifelong and consistent communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, taking a leading part in all activities of her church, and was one of the most interested members in the work of the local American Legion Auxiliary. A woman of many outstanding traits of character, she numbered a host of friends, and was a friend indeed to all about her who were in need. During the past severe Winter when the relief problem was particularly acute in this section, she worked unceasingly and effectively to help in alleviating distress about her among the needy, going far beyond her strength in providing for the wants of many, individually and through the relief organizations of the town and community. The body was brought to Franklin from Mount Pocono Wednesday afternoon by members of her family who were with her there, and funeral rites were held from Emmanuel Church here yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. Norman E. Taylor, local minister-in-charge, and by Bishop A.C. Thomson of the Diocese of Southern Virginia. Pallbearers were: Barclay Pretlow, G.G. McCann, J.F. Matthews, George Watkins, Thos. N. White, Jr., of Franklin, and William T. Woodley of Raleigh, John D. Abbitt, Jr. of Norfolk and A.C. Darden, Jr., of Fortress Monroe. Katherine Lawrence (PRETLOW; Mrs. Colgate W. Sr.) DARDEN, b.
