TYLER DARDEN TEMPERANCE WORKER SUCCUMBS IN OBICI HOSPITAL The cause of temperance in Southampton County suffered an irreparable loss on Saturday morning, August 15, in the death in Obici Hospital, Suffolk, of Mrs. Mae Tyler Darden of Branchville after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Darden, 67, had been president of the Southampton County W.C.T.U. for several years, and had been an enthusiastic worker for temperance since coming to Branchville in 1915 as the bride of John W.H. Darden. Mrs. Darden was the daughter of the late James and Alice Stephenson Tyler of Northampton County, N.C., and a sister of the late Leon O. Tyler of Branchville, former president of the Southampton County Welfare Board. She was a member of the Branchville Baptist Church and its choir; and for years she taught in the Sunday school. She was prominent also in music circles, being a talented pianist. In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, John Tyler Darden of Branchville; a daughter, Mrs. Grant Simms of Courtland; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. R.A. Bridgers of Severn, N.C., and Mrs. Norman G. Harrell of Norfolk. Funeral services for Mrs. Darden were conducted at the residence in Branchville on Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. N.B. Habel, pastor of the Branchville Baptist Church, Rev. Marshall W. Anderson, pastor of the Branchville Methodist Church, and Dr. F. Orion Mixon of Murfreesboro, N.C., president of Chowan College. Mrs. H.M. Purviance sang "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" and she and Mrs. Earl W. Bryant sang "Leave It There," with Mrs. Bryant the accompanist. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Pallbearers were A.D. Beville, Alvin Bridgers, Linwood Bridgers, C.P. Davis, Henry T. Harrell, Charles Sexton, and Edward and Howard Tyler. May* A. (TYLER; Mrs. John W.H.)
