Ashley and Jane Edwards Darden. Nancy was not a strong child due to a defective digestive tract. When she was four years old, her parents took her to a specialist in a Norfolk hospital. After undergoing many tests and examinations, they discovered she had no pancreas. They sent her home with several new drugs and medicines. Last winter Nancy was healthier than she had ever been. They thought there might be some hope for her. In September, Nancy was to have entered the first grade at Newsoms Elementary School. Nancy’s doctor, Dr. McLean, advised her parents not to enter her but they got her first-grade books. She was so proud of them. Her mother taught her each day. Nancy had an unusually bright mind. In October, Nancy caught cold which developed into pneumonia. After a trip to the doctor every day for a week, Dr. McLean decided she’d better go to the hospital. She was put in an oxygen tent for several days and it helped for a while. They let Nancy come home on Nov. 1, and she stayed nearly a week, but continually got worse. On Friday night, Nov. 7, they took her back to the Ahoskie hospital, where she stayed until her death early Monday morning, November 10. Her funeral was at Barnes Methodist Church, where she had attended Sunday school. She was laid to rest in the Newsoms cemetery. Her grave was covered with many beautiful flowers in the shape of pillows, hearts, crosses, baskets and wreaths. We thank God for the life of such a sweet little girl.
