A native of Southampton County, he was a Franklin resident during his childhood. He was a graduate of Franklin High School, a 1932 graduate of University of Richmond and received a master's from Columbia University in 1951. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was a classroom teacher and coach in Southampton County where he also served as principal of Windsor High School and director of instruction. He also served as assistant superintendent of the Isle of Wight County School System. He retired after 42 years service. He was a member of Virginia Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church, Franklin, where he served as a teacher for the L.T. Hall Sunday School class for many years. He was also a member of Windsor Ruritan Club and a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge No. 291, Ivor. Survivors include his wife, Sara Vaughan Darden and two nieces. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, by the Revs. Reginald Warren and Clarence Moore. The family will receive friends at the residence. DARDEN, RETIRED EDUCATOR WINDSOR, VA. - Rufus Hart Darden, 80, of Route 2, a retired educator, died May 4, 1989, in his home. Mr. Darden, a native of Southampton County, was a graduate of Franklin High School, University of Richmond and Columbia University, New York City. He taught in public schools for 42 years. He was a teacher and coach in Southampton County, principal and director of instruction at Windsor High School, and assistant superintendent of the Isle of Wight School system. He was a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, Sigma Pi Epsilon Fraternity, Sycamore Baptist Church in Franklin, Windsor Ruritan Club and recently received a 50 year membership citation from Masonic Lodge 291 of Ivor. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Vaughan Darden, and two nieces. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, by the Rev. Reginald Warren and the Rev. Clarence Moore. Friends may join the family at the residence. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is handling arrangements. (dwl 188/ fam 192; Franklin Dist. {#211}, Southampton Co.; Owns Free of mortgage Farm #83). Note that he is not identical with the Rufus E. DARDEN (1841 - 1911) buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms. His paternal grandfather Joseph James DARDEN is buried in Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery - Row 4, Plot 34.
