Drewry, a native son of Southampton and one of North Carolina's most honored citizens, died at his home in Raleigh, Monday in his 56th year, after an illness of eighteen months. Mr. Drewry was born in Drewryville, Va., July 25, 1860, of a prominent family of this county. He was educated at Bethel Military Academy, Warrenton, Va. and at the University of Virginia. He practiced law for a short time before entering the insurance business in Atlanta. Later he moved to Raleigh where he became state agent for the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company and afterwards became state agent of Virginia also, holding these agencies at the time of his death. He was greatly interested in fraternal work, being grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of Masons of North Carolina for twenty-five years and holding other high positions in Masonic and allied orders. He represented Wake County in the Legislature and Senate; was for several years the principal owner of the Raleigh Times and was largely interested in a number of substantial business enterprises of Raleigh and the State. He was a consistent member of Christ Episcopal Church of Raleigh and a vestryman of that church. He is survived by his widow and a son, John C. Drewry, Jr.; a brother, W.S. Drewry of Richmond, and two sisters, Mrs. R.L. Mason of Masons, Sussex County, and Mrs. J.H. Blick of Drewryville. He is a cousin of S.B. Drewry of Boykins and J.E. Drewry of Capron and is widely connected in this county. [John C.
