He was connected with the old Drewry family, one of the first families of Virginia, and for many years of Southampton County. He was married twice, the first time on the 11th day of March, 1875, to Miss Virginia Branch of Halifax. N.C., who lived only a short time. In 1877 he married Miss Roberta A. Moss,* daughter of Jos. And Nannie Thomas Moss of Boykins, who survives him together with the following children: Mrs. Hattie Pope, Drewryville, Mrs. B.P. Woodard, Mrs. John E. Hood and Humphrey Drewry of Norfolk, Mrs. E.B. Prince of Newsoms, J.S., H.M. and J.H. Drewry and Mrs. J.S. Schneider, Jr., of Boykins, and by one brother, Vernon T. Drewry of Portsmouth. Mr. Drewry received his education at Randolph-Mason College. He lived with his father until his father’s death after which he engaged in the mercantile business in Boykins. He was a successful business man having been twice Commissioner of Revenue. After the death of Col. L.R. Edwards he was appointed to fill the unexpired term as Treasurer of his county, after which he was elected to that office which he held until his death. He was also a prominent farmer. He was a member of Clarksbury M.E. Church South for many years, his father and grandfather being Methodist. It is interesting to note in one of the old records made by a Methodist preacher over a hundred years ago that Brother Humphrey Drewry’s home was his appointed stopping place when in this section. He was also a member of Boykins Lodge No. 287, A.F. & A.M. and of Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias. Burial services were conducted at the grave in the old Drewry cemetery Sunday afternoon, January 21, by Rev. L.R. Black, pastor of Boykins Methodist Church, assisted by Revs. Porter Hardy, E.F. Garner and A.C. Jordan and with Masonic rites, with the lodges of Boykins, Franklin, Courtland and Newsoms taking part. The active pallbearers were B.F. Britt, H.A. Moore, Dr. J.M. Bland, R. Howard, R.A. Pope, W.J. Sebrell, J.P. Fox and H.B. McLemore. Never has there been a greater number of more beautiful flowers or a large gathering of people than at his funeral, which speaks of the love and esteem of his many friends. Southampton County mourns his loss - we are poorer today by having to give up this man of God, this friend of man. He was in truth a Christian, father, husband, citizen. May God’s richest blessings rest upon those who are left and may his life be an inspiration to us. Samuel Blount DREWRY, merchant & farmer, Southampton Co.
