Edwards, 89, widow of Col. Luther R. Edwards and daughter of the late Menalcus and Mrs. Martha McClenny Lankford, died late Friday afternoon, October 21, at her home, "Sycamore Hill," in West Franklin. She had been an invalid from arthritis for more than a dozen years, but was seriously ill for about a two weeks, her death resulting from pneumonia. Mrs. Edwards was born in Franklinton, N.C., on September 21, 1860, but moved to Southampton County as a child and had made her home here until the time of her death. She was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, being one of its oldest communicants. In 1886 she married L.R. Edwards, who died in 1918. Mrs. Edwards was a sister of the late Dr. Livius Lankford of Norfolk and the late Rev. W.E. Lankford of Drewryville. She was also the aunt of the late Dr. Burnley Lankford of Norfolk, and the late Menalcus Lankford of Norfolk, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the second congressional district of Virginia. She is survived by a son, Franklin Edwards, Commissioner of Revenue for Southampton County; a stepdaughter, Miss Blanche Edwards of Franklin; two grandsons, Gordon Edwards of Chicago, Ill., and L. Rice Edwards of Washington, D.C.; and several nieces and nephews, including Henry J. Lankford and Mrs. Tazewell Thompson of Norfolk, Dr. Arthur Lankford of Baltimore, Md., Dr. Livius Lankford of Santa Fe, N. Mex., McClenny Lankford of Denven, Colo., and Mrs. Janice Lankford Forbes of Norfolk. Funeral rites for Mrs. Edwards were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery by Rev. Randolph Gregory, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson, a former pastor of the church, and Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Henderson, N.C. Active pallbearers were John C. Parker, Dr. Beaman Story and Edgar T. Fitzgerald of Franklin, Alexander W. Parker of Richmond, William Royall of Wake Forest, N.C. and Henry J. Lankford of Norfolk.
