He was a native of Southampton County, son of Walter W. and Mrs. Manetta Gardner Edwards. He was a member and former deacon of Franklin Baptist Church and member of the Bruner Men’s Bible Class. He was a charter member and past president of Franklin Lions Club, a former town councilman and a member of P.D. Camp Hunt Club, of which he was secretary and treasurer 25 years. He was a member of Franklin Masonic Lodge and Khedive Temple of Norfolk. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ethel Lanier Edwards; a son, Dr. Gardner T. Edwards, Jr., resident physician at Mayo Clinic, Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Jacquelin Cohen of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Roy T. Edwards and Robert Edwards of Franklin; and two grandsons. A funeral service was conducted in Holland Funeral Home chapel Monday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins of Franklin Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. Henry L. Gardner, Jr., Edward Gilliam, Carl Steinhardt, Joe Bynum Gay, Jr., George E. Pillow, Willie Weede, Eldridge Whitehead and Howard Evans. ****************************************************************************** RITES CONDUCTED FOR G.T. EDWARDS A funeral service for Gardner Tyler Edwards, who died Saturday was conducted in W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home Monday by Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of Franklin Baptist Church.
