All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HERBERT CLAIBORNE EDWARDS People of Courtland and the surrounding territory were saddened by the death Saturday morning, March 15, in a Richmond hospital of Herbert C. Edwards. Mr. Edwards, well known and popular merchant at the county seat, had been in ill health for several months. At the time of his death he was 63 years of age. A native of Southampton County, Mr. Edwards had spent his entire life in or near Courtland. He was a son of the late William E. and Mary Speight Edwards of Southampton County, and was the oldest deacon of the Courtland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Amos Edwards and a son, Herbert, both of Courtland; two brothers, W.E. and R.G. Edwards, also of Courtland; and a sister, Mrs. Sallie E. Cross of Whaleyville. On Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock funeral services were conducted at the residence in Courtland by Rev. N.D. Blackman of the Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Percy D. White of the Methodist Church. The body was laid to rest in the Courtland cemetery, with the following neighbors and friends acting as pallbearers: Junius W. Pulley, Wilbur J. Manry, R.B. Story, H.B. McLemore, Jr., W.B. Ellis, E.D. Priggen, B.A. Gillette, and G.M. Raines.
