Samuel Hurley Edwards, Jr., 82, of the 200 block of Williamson Road, died Jan. 11, 2000, in a Portsmouth hospital. A native of Capron, he retired as a welder from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop 26, after 33 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and American-Fellowship Masonic Lodge No. 148. He is survived by his wife, Edith J. Edwards; a daughter, Carolyn De Kam and husband, Machiel, of Chesapeake; a brother, Sidney Edwards, of Conway, N.C.; and a step-grandson, Christopher Robinson. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Olive Branch Cemetery with Masonic rites by the Rev. Gene V. Primm. The family asks that flowers be omitted. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is in charge.
