All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM RAYMOND AND RUBY LEE EDWARDS THREE KILLED IN FRIDAY NIGHT AUTO ACCIDENT A joint graveside funeral service for William Raymond Edwards and his wife, Ruby was conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by Dr. Ira D. Hudgins of Franklin Baptist Church. W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home was in charge. Edwards, 43, was killed instantly, as was his wife, Ruby Lee, 39, in an automobile accident Friday night. A native of Southampton County, Edwards was a son of William Randolph and Mrs. Caroline Bailey Edwards. A Navy veteran of World War II, Edwards was an employee of Union Camp Corp. forestry division. Surviving is a son, William Raymond Edwards Jr. of Franklin. A native of Greenville County, Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of John and Mrs. Clarice Shaw. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Alice Shaw Archer of Emporia. State Trooper E.H. Davis Jr. said the accident occurred on highway 189, 4.8 miles south of Holland when an automobile occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, swerved left into the path of a vehicle driven by Jesse Grooms, 37 of 35 Dwight Rd., Newport News. The Edwards’ car was headed north and apparently was trying to pass a third vehicle. Edwards was believed to be the driver, Davis said. Groom’s wife, June Elizabeth, 35, also died of a fractured skull. Of four other people taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital, Groom was most seriously hurt. He is being treated for a broken jaw and ribs and arm cuts. He was listed in fair condition Wednesday morning. A daughter, Patricia Ann, 18, and a son, Jesse Jr., 17, passengers in the rear seat, suffered minor injuries. Grooms was a welder at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co.
