Edwards, well-known Franklin resident, died at his home in First Avenue Sunday morning following a brief illness. He was 66 years of age, the son of the late M. Riddick Edwards of the Unity community and of Mrs. Sue Bowden Edwards of Isle of Wight County. Coming to Franklin as a young man, he lived here for a few years; spent a short while at Berlin, and had made his home in Franklin for the past 28 years. He was a genial and likable man, the soul of honor and integrity, and numbered many friends. For several years he had been seriously crippled by rheumatism, and his familiar figure on our streets, riding in his buggy behind his faithful horse, "Bill," will be greatly missed along Main Street and on the athletic field, where, as an ardent patron of all sport, he rarely missed a game of baseball of football, seated in his buggy in right field at baseball, or riding along the lines as the football went up and down the gridiron. He was one of the old members of the deer hunt club at Camp P.D., these outings playing a large part in his life where he was a great favorite with all who are fortunate enough to be included in those occasions of good sport and fellowship. He married Miss Manetta Florence Gardner of Courtland, who died January 13, 1922, and they are survived by three sons, Gardner T., Roy and Herbert Edwards; by two grandchildren, Jacqueline Lanier and Gardner T. Edwards, Jr., to whom he was devoted; by four brothers, Tyler, Livy M. and James Riddick Edwards of Franklin, and J. Ernest Edwards of Whaleyville, and by three sisters, Mrs. G.C. Brothers of Whaleyville, Mrs. John M. Smith of Chevy Chase, Md., and Mrs. L.E. Holloway of Newport News. Funeral services were conducted from his residence Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Dunn, N.C., and Rev. J.R. Taylor of Whaleyville. He was also a charter member of the Bruner Bible Class of the local Baptist Church and of the order of Odd Fellows. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the active pallbearers being: R.C. Branch, W.H. Lankford, Dr. R.L. Raiford, J.F. Bryant, Jr., F.E. Howell and W.O. Bristow, G.C. Picot and Guy Hill of Como, R.F. Marks of Boykins and Elliott Nicholson of Murfreesboro, honorary pallbearers being selected from a number of friends.
