Eley, who had made his home in that city with his son, J. Laurence Eley, since the early part of the year 1928. Mr. "Bose" Eley, as he was well and familiarly known here, was born at Mapleton, Hertford County, N.C., September 19, 1845, the son of Laurence Eley and Mrs. Susan Vann Eley. As a young man he heard and heeded the call to arms in 1861, serving throughout the War Between the States in a Hertford County company. The writer had heard many of Mr. Eley’s former comrades speak of him as a brave and gallant soldier, and as was eminently fitting, his casket was draped with the beautiful battle flag of the Southern Confederacy at his funeral yesterday, the local chapter Daughters of the Confederacy reserving this last token of honor and respect for those who followed the Stars and Bars in that immortal conflict. Mr. Eley was a merchant in Boykins, this county, for some time where he married Miss Alice Darden. There was one child of this union, Elmo M. Eley, one of Franklin’s finest citizens, who died here in 1918. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Eley moved to Franklin and was engaged in the mercantile business here for more than 40 years, being successively with C.C. Vaughan, Sr., J.P. Gay, W.J.M. Holland and then in the clothing business with his son, Elmo Eley, as E.S. Eley & Son. On October 22, 1891, he married Miss Margaret Parker, sister of the late Jno. C. Parker of our town, who survives him with one son, J. Laurence Eley of Norfolk. There are also two grandchildren, the daughters of Elmo Eley, Misses Emily and Marion Eley. Two sisters in Hertford County, both of whom are dead, were Mrs. George Darden and Mrs. Nannie Parker. He was an upright and honored citizen, a consistent member of the Franklin Baptist Church where he was a member of its board of deacons for many years. He was a member of Urquhart-Gillette Camp of Confederate Veterans, and was one of those small bands which remained with General Joseph E. Johnston after the surrender at Appomattox, and was mustered out of service at Durham, N.C., April 16, 1865. Funeral services were conducted there yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Franklin Baptist Church by Mr. Eley’s pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, and interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The body bearers were: Geo. H. Parker, E. Frank Story, Joe Bynum Gay, W.H. Lankford, D.T. Prince, Thos. L. Parker, W.C. Watson and Dr. A.P. Cutchin. Among out-of-town relatives who were here for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Homer Parker, Mr. and Mrs. David Parker of Mapleton, Henry B. Vann of Winton and Guy C. Picot of Como, N.C.; Miss Mary V. Parker of Richmond, Mrs. Jasper Cotton of Chuckatuck, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Branch, Oliver and Mae Branch of Smithfield, Va.
