Eley, 95, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, after a brief illness. He was born in Southampton County, Va., and was the son of the late Joseph Thomas Sr., and Mamie Harcum Eley. He had lived most of his life in Battery Park, Va. Mr. Eley was an U.S. Army veteran of WWII and was a career shipwright at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the Battery Park Baptist Church and was a deacon and for many years was the building and grounds superintendent. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his wife, the late Mildred Parsons Eley; his brother, J.T. Eley Jr.; and his sister, Mildred Reynolds. He is survived by his brother, Raymond Eley and his wife, Betty of Hillsboro, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of extended family. A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, in St. Luke's Memorial Park, with speaker, Woody Copeland, officiating. Family and friends will gather from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, in Colonial Funeral Home for visitation. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, Isle of Wight Chapter, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
