Mr. Eley was a well known citizen and farmer and had spent practically all of his life in the community. He was an earnest conscientious man, a hard worker and was content to give of his best to his family and his farm, being unostentatious in his living and a useful and neighborly man among his people. Unusually healthy for the greater part of his life, his health failed about nine years ago and he had been a great sufferer for the last four or five years, bearing it with Christian patience and fortitude. Mr. Eley was for many years a faithful member of Bethany Christian Church and when that organization was disbanded moved his membership to the Franklin Christian Church, always attending its services until ill health prevented. He was a devoted, kind and loving husband and father and is survived by his widow, who was Miss Helen Councill; by three sons, J.T. Eley of Suffolk, John L. Eley and Presley L. Eley of this community; one daughter, Mrs. T.A. Gillette of Franklin 14 grandchildren and two brothers, Geo. T. Eley of Suffolk and James E. Eley of Philadelphia. Funeral services were held from his home Friday, December 24, at 11 o’clock a.m. by his Pastor, Rev. F. C. Lester, and interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery here. Joseph Henry ELEY, farmer, d. 23 Dec 1926, near Franklin, age 73*, interred in Poplar Spring Cemetery (Section 1, Plot 93A), Franklin, 24 Dec 1926, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), Jan. 7, 1937, p. 8 *While obit gives age 75, SCHS Cemetery Project gives 1852-1926.
