Eley dies Suddenly while Visiting Suffolk James Clifton Eley, long-time resident of Franklin, passed away suddenly this morning (Thursday) in Suffolk. Mr. Eley has been in failing health for the past year. He is survived by his wife, Jonnie Newsome Eley. Mr. Eley's parents were Alpha O. and Eugenia Beale Eley of Isle of Wight County. Mr. Eley is a member of the Congregational Christian Church of Franklin and was formerly employed by Jones-Hayes Company of Franklin. Funeral arrangements were pending as The Tidewater News went to press. W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home will be in charge of the services. JAMES CLIFTON ELEY FRANKLIN, APRIL 9 - Funeral services for James Clifton Eley, who died Thursday were conducted today at 2:30 p.m. at the W.J.M. Holland and Sons by the Rev. Harvey L. Carnes, pastor of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, and the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were, T.A. Darden, Vernon Cotton, W.H. Harris, Vaughan Beale, Emerson Jones, L.B. Norfleet, Carlton Hutchins and Hayes Holland.
