Eley of this town, died at Mt. Regis Sanitarium, Salem, Va. Tuesday afternoon, January 3, following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Eley was 31 years of age, and a young man of exceptional ability and promise. Graduating from the Franklin High School in 1912, and in February of the same year, prior to the completion of his school course, entered the banking house of Vaughan and Company where he continued as a valued and efficient employee until going to the hospital only a few weeks ago. He was a loyal and consistent communicant of High Street M.E. Church being a member of the Board of Stewards and Superintendent of the Young People’s Department of the Sunday school. For a number of years he was Secretary of the Sunday school and had also held the position of Assistant Superintendent. An active member of Blackwater Lodge No. 141, I.O.O.F., he was Past Noble Grand of that order and its Treasurer at the time of his death. On October 27, 1926, he married Miss Margaret Story Cutchin, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ashley Cutchin of this town, who, with his mother, survives him. He is also survived by two aunts, Mrs. S.R. Nicholson of Franklin, Mrs. J.E. Eubank of Richmond, and an uncle, J.D. Powell of King William County. Funeral service were conducted from his late home in North High Street Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Geo. H. Spooner, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson. Mrs. J.J. Pace, Miss Cora Vaughan, J. Edgar Weede and J. Edward Moyler sang "The Haven of Rest" as a special number. Internet followed in the family burial plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The body bearers were: Cecil Vaughan III, Edgar B. Jackson, J. Linwood Edwards, W.M. Weede, J.F. Matthews, J. Edward Moyler, Sam Cutchins and Maynard Monroe of New York. The honorary pallbearers were; General C.C. Vaughan, Dr. W.H. Arthur and the Board of Stewards of the Methodist Church, W.T. Pace, F. Franklin Story, C.W. Gary, J.R. Byrd, J.A. Jackson, Harry Steinhardt, W.C. Watson, Dr. W.E. Snipes, Geo. H. Parker, G.G. Smith, J.H. Boyd, E.C. Smith, J. Edgar Weede and C.V. McGehee. Among out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Eubank of Richmond and their daughter, Mrs. George Short of Lawrenceville, J.D. Powell of King William County and Edgar P. Nicholson of Milton, Delaware.
