High Street early Saturday morning, October 10, after several months of failing health. The husband of Mrs. Pauline Lankford Eley of Franklin, he was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Virginia Councill Eley of this county. A member of the Sycamore Baptist Church, he had made his home in Franklin since 1934. In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Miss Pauline Elizabeth Eley of Franklin; four sons, Jasper Eley of Jackson, N.C., and John L. Eley, Jr., Clyde H. Eley and William Herman Eley, all of Franklin; two grandchildren; a half-sister, Mrs. T.A. Gillette, Sr., of Franklin; and a half- brother, J.T. Eley of Portsmouth. Services were held at the residence on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, with Rev. L.M. Kanipe, pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church, Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of Franklin Baptist Church, and Rev. R.D. Stephenson, former pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Fenton Cobb, Hunter Darden, Jr., G.C. Duck, J.T. Eley, Jr., Pressley Eley, Jr., T.A. Gillette, Jr., James I. Lankford and Jesse Frank Vaughan.
