Eley of Courtland, died at his home in that town Saturday, July 22, in his 58th year. He was a native of Windsor, Va., and for the past 17 years had lived in Courtland where he practiced his occupation as a barber until he gave up his work a few months ago on account of ill-health. He was a quiet, unassuming but conscientious and useful citizen; a faithful member of the Courtland Methodist Church, a good husband and father. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice V. Eley; five daughters, Misses Annie, Letha, Thelma, Marie and Elizabeth Eley of Courtland; a son, Hubert L. Eley of Petersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Daniel Kelly of Chuckatuck, Mrs. Solon Richards of Portsmouth and Mrs. Jesse Johnson of Chuckatuck, besides several half-brothers and sisters. His funeral was conducted Monday morning at 11 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. W.L. Burks and the interment made in Beechwood* cemetery, Courtland. The active pallbearers were H.A. Gillette, C.W. Parker, B.A. Williams, C.W. Whitehead, Dr. E.F. Reese, Jas. T. Gillette; honorary, C.L. Grizzard, R.A. Wynns, R.T. Whitfield, H.B. McLemore, W.J. Story, E. Whitfield, Wm. Shands, J.W. Bryant, Jas. E. Sebrell, J.E. Whitfield, Jr., B.B. Joyner, W.E. Darden. *This should read Riverside Cemetery, Courtland not "Beechwood."
