"Miss Mattie," as she was known to all her friends and acquaintance, would have been 83 years of age had she lived until September 4. She was born on that date in 1866 at Mangohick, King William County, the daughter of the late James and Sarah Rainey Powell, and had made her home in Franklin for more than half a century. She was a loyal member of High Street Methodist Church and a faithful attendant upon its services until a short time before her last illness. That her faithfulness in the activities of the Ladies’ Aid Society and afterwards the Women’s Society of Christian Service was appreciated by her co-workers is attested by the fact that one of the groups in the latter organization was called the "Mattie Eley Circle" and is still know by that name. Her husband, David H. Eley, died on July 14, 1917, and her only son, James Powell Eley, died on January 3, 1928. After the death of her son she made her home with her sister, Mrs. Della P. Nicholson, who preceded her to the grave several years ago. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. J.E. Eubank of Richmond and Mrs. Marius Campbell of Mangohick; also by two nieces, Mrs. Harrison Haller of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. George Short of Lawrenceville, and two nephews, Barlett Powell of Richmond and Edgar P. Nicholson of Indianapolis, Ind. Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 4:30 o’clock at the residence, 508 N. High Street. Rev. E.N. Hassell will officiate, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson. Burial will be in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Mattie Antoinette (POWELL; Mrs. David H.)
