A native of Surry, he was the widower of Virginia Bowden Ellis, and the son of the late Robert Benjamin Ellis and Lona Mae [sic*] Warner Ellis. He had retired as a farmer. He was a member and deacon of Ivor Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Nell Ellis Jackson of Suffolk; six sisters, Mattie E. Goodrich of Smithfield, Lucille E. LeBas of Petersburg, Donnie E. McGuriman of Surry, Martha E. Murphy of Battery Park, Margaret E. Helmich of Carrollton, and Sarah E. Powell of Magnolia, N.C.; four brothers, Robert Ellis and B.W. Ellis, both of Suffolk, Thomas Ellis of Dendron, and S.M. Ellis of Knoxville, Pa. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Ivor Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas R. Edwards. The family will be at the Hill Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be sent to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad. His mother's name was Rosa May. His parents "R. Ben & May W. ELLIS" are buried in the Old Brick Church Cemetery, Bacons Castle, Surry Co. Find a Grave calls it Lower Surry Cemetery.
