GEORGE WASHINGTON ELLIS 

   DEATH OF GEORGE W. ELLIS 

  George W. Ellis, 82, life-long resident and farmer of Southampton County, 
died at his home in Newsoms last Tuesday night, August 28, after an illness 
of many weeks.

  Mr. Ellis was the husband of Mrs. Lily [sic; Lillie] E. Ellis and son of 
the late Benjamin and Mrs. Martha Chitty Ellis, of Southampton County.  He 
was a life member of Newsoms Baptist Church.

  Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. G.W. Porter and 
Mrs. L.L. Porter, of Newsoms, Mrs. Fletcher Taylor and Mrs. W.R. Bryant, of 
Portsmouth; five sons, G.H. and P.D. Ellis, of Portsmouth, B.F. Ellis, of 
Newsoms, W.B. Ellis of Courtland, and J.S. Ellis of Franklin; 30 
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

  The funeral was conducted at the graveside in the Newsoms cemetery last 
Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock by Mr. Ellis’ pastor, Rev. R.C. Wells, 
assisted by Rev. J.W. Morrison of Newsoms Methodist Church.  The pallbearers 
were C.Q. Ferguson, C.C. Bradshaw, Ed. Vick, R.L. Barnes, Felix Bryant and 
Paul Edwards.
