ELLIS Mrs. George W. Ellis, 79, of Newsoms died in a Portsmouth hospital on Saturday afternoon, February 22 after an illness of several weeks. A member of the Newsoms Baptist Church, she was the widow of the late George Washington Ellis of the Newsoms community. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. G.W. Porter of Newsoms and Mrs. Fletcher Taylor and Mrs. W.R. Bryant of Portsmouth; five sons George H. Ellis of Norfolk, B.F. Ellis of Newsoms, W.B. Ellis of Courtland, D.P. Ellis of Portsmouth, and J. Stanton Ellis of Stony Creek; 24 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; and two sisters, Mrs. Logan Bland of Portsmouth and Mrs. Pearl Butler of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Newsoms Cemetery on Monday afternoon by Rev. R.L. Chadwick, pastor of the Newsoms Baptist Church, Rev. J.W. Felton of Portsmouth, Rev. Arnold B. Blount of Norfolk, and Rev. L.M. Kanipe of Courtland. The pallbearers were Roy Bradshaw, Felix Bryant, J.L. Cogsdale, J.Leroy Dail, J.W. Drake, C.Q. Ferguson, Eddie Vick and H.C. Vincent.
