WILLIE BURSE ELLIS

   COURTLAND - A funeral service for William Burse Ellis was conducted at 
5 p.m. Saturday in the Courtland Baptist Church by the Rev. Herman Smith 
and the Rev. L.M. Kanipe, former pastors.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery 
with W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home in charge.

   Pallbearers were Gordan Grizzard, Edwin Priggin, Donnie Eason, Clayton 
Whitehead, W.R. Bryant and Richard Railey.

   Ellis, 68, a retired barber died Thursday night in Medical College 
Hospital, Richmond after a long illness.  He was the husband of Mrs. Sarah 
Bradshaw Ellis and the son of George Washington and Mrs. Lilly Simmons Ellis.

   A native of Southampton County, he was a member of the Courtland Baptist 
Church, a former teacher of the Ellis Bible Class which was named for him, a 
former deacon, a member and Pastmaster of the Courtland Masonic Lodge 85, a 
member of the Courtland Ruritan Club and former Councilman of the town of 
Courtland.

   Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. J.L. Fisher of 
Greensboro, N.C. and Mrs. J.L. Grissom of Courtland; three brothers, Herbert 
Ellis of Portsmouth, Stanton Ellis of Stony Creek and Pete Ellis of Newsoms; 
three sisters, Mrs. Estelle Porter of Newsoms, Mrs. Fletcher Taylor and Mrs. 
W.R. Bryant of Portsmouth and seven grandchildren.
