All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MAVIS MARIE FLYTHE 12-YEAR OLD BOYKINS GIRL DROWNED IN LAKE Mavis Marie Flythe, 12-years old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Flythe of Boykins was drowned at Everett's Lake near Emporia Thursday night of last week. She was visiting relatives in Roanoke Rapids at the time, and had gone with them on a picnic that afternoon. The exact details of her death are unknown, as no one saw her when she drowned. Her body was found about four hours after her relatives and friends missed her. Mavis was an active little church worker and a lovable child whom everyone admired. Her membership was in the Baptist Church, where her funeral services were conducted last Saturday afternoon at 3:30. The Rev. F.B. Handley, her pastor, conducted the service, and was assisted by the Rev. E.B. Loving of Boykins, and Rev. Mr. Haney of Roanoke Rapids. Music was rendered by the choir, and Miss Emily Hines sang "Good Night and Good Morning." The following schoolmates and friends were pallbearers: Henry Ricks, Archie Lee, Linwood Lee, Wilma Lee, David Worrell and Grover Worrell. She is survived by a large family circle, including: her father and mother; Mrs. Minnie Griffin, maternal grandmother, Boykins; Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Flythe, paternal grandparents, Conway, N.C. and many aunts and uncles.
