All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN BAKER FELTS John Baker Felts, 86, died at the residence near Boykins of his daughter, Mrs. J.H. Griffin, at 12:10 o'clock Monday afternoon, December 6. A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was a son of the late Nathaniel T. and Mrs. Martha Reece Felts. He had been a member of the Boykins Baptist Church for the past 74 years, longer than any other person in the church. Even though invalided for several months, he continued to operate his farms up to the time of his death. Mr. Felts was twice married. His first wife was the former Miss Annie Laurie Hines; and after her death he married Miss Laura Wyche Dunn, who also preceded him in death. A son, John Baker, Jr., died in Baltimore, Md., just six weeks ago. Besides Mrs. Griffin he is survived by three other daughters, Mrs. Fred Beck of Detroit, Mich, Mrs. J.M. Miller of Hampton, and Mrs. M.E. Whitehead of Mufreesboro, N.C.; three sons, J.C. Felts of Jarratt, J.W. Felts of Boykins, and W.T. Felts of Phoenix, Md.; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother; C.B. Felts of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Applewhite and Mrs. J.T. Rawls of Portsmouth. Funeral services were conducted at the Boykins Baptist Church of Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. J.R. Johnson of the Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg, officiating, assisted by Rev. F.B. Handley, pastor of the Crewe Baptist Church, and Rev. William S. Ferguson, pastor of the Boykins Methodist Church. Interment was in Beechwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were J.M. Britt, Earl W. Bryant, H.O. Carlton, J.T. Davis, W.R. Emmons, Dr. J.J. Grizzard, Hinton T. Smith, and W.W. White, Jr. Members of the Baptist Men's Bible class served as honorary pallbearers.
