He was 64 years of age and was a native of Isle of Wight County, being born near Franklin, the son of the late Abram and Mrs. Wealthy Fowler. On April 2, 1888, he married Miss Adina Councill of his home community, who survives him with seven children; A.B. Fowler of Hagerstown, Md., Joseph and Jack Fowler of this town; Mrs. Henry Duck of Franklin, Mrs. John S. Allen of Doswell, Va., Mrs. Paul K. Cummins of Suffolk and Miss Ursula Fowler of Franklin. He is also survived by several grandchildren and by two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Councill and Miss Callie Fowler of this community. Mr. Fowler was a man of unusually fine character, quiet, unassuming and considerate of everyone. He possessed unusual ability as a builder and architect and was noted for conscientiousness and thoroughness in his work as well as in his dealings with his fellows generally. For a number of years he had been connected with E.C. Smith, local contractor, and was known and esteemed by a wide circle of friends in Virginia and North Carolina. He was for several years a member of the Town of Franklin School Board where he rendered efficient service. When a boy of 17 he joined South Quay Baptist Church and served that organization faithfully as deacon and as superintendent of its Sunday school. Moving to Franklin in 1907, he united with the local Baptist Church where he was a consistent member, living as a Christian above reproach. He formerly taught the men’s Bible class in the Baptist Sunday school here later known as the Crocker Class. Funeral services were held from his residence in Clay Street Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the presence of a large assembly of friends. Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Geo. R. Pankey, conducted the services and the local church choir sang. Interment was made in the family plot at Poplar Spring Cemetery, the body bearers being: Geo. H. Parker, W.T. Pace, E.G. Evans, E.C. Smith, J. Powell Eley, Jas. A. Johnson, C.E. Pond and W.F. Hart.
