Fiers, winged its flight to God. The subject of this sketch was born in this county, June 20, 1850, and died in Lakeview Hospital Suffolk, January 28th 1921, at one p.m. He was the son of Elvin R. and Amorette Bryant Fiers, of large means and wide reputation. When 22 years of age on the 28th day of February he was married to one of the most charming young women of his neighborhood or of this State, Miss Nannie L. Thorp. Of this union there were born the following children; Mrs. W.E. Moore of Pocomoke City, Md.; Mrs. F.E. Everett of Windsor, Va.; Mrs. K.R. Bishop of Handsom; Mrs. C.E. Wilhoit of Charlottesville; Mr. Elvin L. Fiers of Sunbeam, and Mrs. Bruce Brittingham of Portsmouth, the last named preceding him to the Great Beyond by several years. Is whole life was spent in his native county where he engaged in the mercantile business until he finally settled down on his farm and devoted the balance of his days to the tilling of the soil. Mr. Fiers was widely known as was attested by the large concourse of friends who gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to their departed friend. His body was brought to Handsom Sunday morning, the 30th, and carried to New Hope Church where his funeral was conducted by his pastor, Rev. C.H. Kidd, and his mortal remains were laid to rest in the graveyard near by on the old former Fiers plantation to await the resurrection of mankind. He was buried with Masonic honors, having been a Mason for 47 years and the third oldest Mason in the county. His active pallbearers were J.T. Bryant, V.K. Daughtrey, Dr. S.J. Railey, J.Y. Stephenson, J.D. Carter, L.M. Miles, E.F. Drake, T.E. Bryant and L.L. Bryant; honorary, Dr. W.B. Barham, Gen. C.C. Vaughan, N. Lee Story, B. Ferguson, John Railey, S.L. Bryant, E.S. Eley, C.F. Whitfield, J.T. Bradshaw, L.L. Manry, W.V. Simmons, J.H. Hedgepeth, T.A. Bishop, J.T. Carter, J.F. Bishop, W.E. Beale, W.H. Jenkins, J.A. Oberry, S.R. Nicholson, J.R. Gilliam, Alex. Drake, R.T. Barnes and Dr. B.A. Pope. It is useless to say that a figure so familiar as he in the Sunbeam neighborhood where he spent his latter days will be missed by young and old, white and black. To his faithful wife, and mourning children we would but remind them of Christ’s words as found in the 14th chapter of St. John’s Gospel which brings to us light in the time of darkness, hope in the time of despair, life in the face of death, and happiness in the hour of sorrow.
