FRISTOE, PROMINENT RETIRED MINISTER, DIES HERE Dr. Ashby Jackson Fristoe, prominent retired Baptist minister, died Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.P. Rawls, in West Franklin. Dr. Fristoe had been in failing health since a breakdown several years ago, when he was retired from the ministry. He was born near Bentonville, Warren County, Va., the son of the late Alfred and Sarah Fristoe and was 76 years old. He was educated at Front Royal Academy, Richmond College and Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, receiving his theological degree from Crozer Seminary. He was married to Miss Mary Ethelberta* Lewis, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Strother Lewis of Culpeper in 1885, his wife being with him in their daughter’s home at the time of his death this week. Dr. Fristoe had held pastorates in Rappahannock and Accomac counties, Va., at the Second Baptist Church, Petersburg; Central Baptist Church, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Fourth Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and the Park Avenue Baptist Church, Norfolk. For 12 years Dr. Fristoe was evangelist for the Maryland Baptist Association and for a part of that period was also Secretary of the State Mission Board. He suffered a serious breakdown from over-work in connection with these duties, retiring at that time and never completely recovering. After his retirement Dr. Fristoe conducted evangelistic services in Baptist churches of Philadelphia for two winters. Dr. Fristoe after retiring, spent his time with his children, largely in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Rawls here, he and Mrs. Fristoe being admired and respected throughout the Franklin community. Dr. Fristoe had made a host of friends during his long ministry and was one of the distinguished figures in the Southern Baptist denomination, being a man of deep piety, coupled with a thorough scholarship, and was an untiring student. He is survived besides his wife by seven children, five daughters; Mrs. J.D. Wilkins of Greensboro, N.C., Mrs. R.P. Rawls of Franklin, Mrs. I.W. Cashatt of New York City, Mrs. H.E. Bloomsburg and Mrs. H.W. Arnold of Westfield, N.J.; two sons, H.W. Fristoe of New Orleans, La., and A.D. Fristoe of York, Ala., and one brother, Luther Fristoe of Bentonville, Va.
