All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ANNIE LEE GARDNER GAY Mrs. Annie Lee Gay, wife of Joe Bynum Gay, died at her home in Fourth Avenue Tuesday night after an illness of about two weeks. Mrs. Gay was the daughter of Captain A.L. Gardner and the late Mrs. Bettie Lee Gardner of this town, and was born in Franklin June 3, 1876. She is survived by her husband; one son, Joe Bynum Gay, Jr., and a grandson, Joe Bynum Gay, 3rd; by her father and stepmother; a sister, Mrs. W.H. Pierce of Danville; a half-sister, Dr. Emily Gardner of Richmond and a half-brother, Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Dunn, N.C. An only brother, A.L. Gardner, Jr., died number of years ago, and she leaves a large and prominent family connection here and throughout this section of the State. Mrs. Gay, who was an alumna of Elon College, was a woman of varied and useful activities, numbering a wide circle of friends. She was especially interested in the work of her church and of the Christian denomination generally as an active member of the Franklin Christian Church and as Vice President of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. She was President of the Eastern Virginia Woman’s Missionary Conference, and had held other important offices in the work of the missionary organizations of the church. She was a charter member of the Franklin Book Club, a member of Agnes Lee Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy, and of Constantia Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution of Suffolk. Funeral services were held from the Franklin Christian Church yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the presence of an unusually large assemblage of friends, including many from Suffolk, Norfolk and other places. The service was directed by Dr. Elwood W. Jones, pastor of the church, assisted by two of its former pastors, Dr. C.H. Rowland of Greensboro, N.C., and Rev. N.G. Newman of Holy Neck; Dr. L.E. Smith, president of Elon and the Rev. R. D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church. Hymns sung by the church choir included, "The Church’s One Foundation" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: J.F. Bryant, Jr., C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, W.O. Bristow, P.A. Jones, J.A. Williams, L. Pretlow Holland and John P.
