All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ANNIE ELIZABETH GAY Miss Annie Elizabeth Gay, member of an old and well-known Southampton family, died Wednesday afternoon after an illness of about two weeks at the residence of her sister, Mrs. B.L. Holt, in Clay Street, with whom she had made her home for a number of years. Miss Gay was the daughter of the late Littleton Allen Gay and Mrs. Rosa Bryant Gay of this county and was born at the country home in Southampton 69 years ago, she had been a veritable mother to the brothers and sisters in the home and was widely known and esteemed by many friends. She was educated at the private schools in this town and at Chowan College, Murfreesboro, teaching for a number of years in the public schools at Boykins, Whaleyville, Nurneyville and in the Franklin Seminary. She had been a consistent and useful member of the Franklin Baptist Church for more than half a century. Surviving her are two brothers, Joe Bynum Gay and L. Ashby Gay, one sister, Mrs. B.L. Holt, all of this town. Another sister, Mrs. W.G. Parker, died a number of years ago. She also leaves two nephews, Douglas L. Holt of Chattanooga, and Joe Bynum Gay, Jr. of this town, and town nieces, Misses Antoinette and Annie Greenhow Parker, of Danville, besides a large and prominent family connection. Funeral services were conducted at the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock by her Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, the active pallbearers being: Douglas L. Hall, Joe Bynum Gay, Jr., Joe Gay Bryant, Edgar B. Jackson, Geo. H. Parker, Jr., J.J. Finley, Jr., W.H. Pierce and S.F. Winiker of Danville.
