Mrs. Gay, a Salisbury, N.C., native, was a member of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church; Franklin Shade Tree Commission; Southampton Garden Club; Southampton Memorial Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary; and Southampton Historical Society. She had attended Elon College and was the widow of Joe B. Gay Jr. Survivors include a son, Joe B. Gay III of Franklin; four sisters, Mildred H. Overcash, Bernice H. McLeod and Rachel H. Demans, all of Charlotte, N.C. and Adleta H. White of Dallas; two brothers, Jack J. Hartman and William E. Hartman of Charlotte; and two grandchildren. A graveside service was conducted Monday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by Revs. Richard Diekman and Ben R. Duffey. Wright Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
