Franklin Glover, a resident of the Airport Apartments, apparently shot his wife, Betty Wise Glover, then took his own life with a 12 gauge shotgun Monday around 4 p.m. The couple were found dead around 7:30 p.m. by Mrs. James Glover, a sister- in-law, who lives in an apartment across the street from them. Glover, a crane operator and log scaler in the Lumber Yard at Union Bag- Camp for more than 13 years, was a native of Franklin. The shooting apparently occurred following a domestic quarrel according to Isle of Wight Deputy Sheriff B.F. Dixon. Dixon said Mrs. Glover had visited them earlier in afternoon. They were quarreling and she left. A few minutes later she heard what she thought were fire crackers, said Dixon. She returned about 7:30 and saw their bodies when she looked through a window. She called Franklin police, who notified Isle of Wight authorities. Dr. T.A. Morgan, Southampton County medical examiner, said Mrs. Glover apparently died instantly from the discharge of a 12-guage shotgun into her chest, while her husband, who had shot himself in the abdomen, probably lived a while in an unconscious condition. Their 8 year-old daughter and only child, Frankie Peggy Glover, was visiting the James Glover [home] at the time of the dual tragedy. A daughter of Pierre and Mrs. Jule Elizabeth Shumbert Wise of Smithfield, Mrs. Glover was a Lexington, S.C., native and a member of Roan Baptist Church. Her survivors, besides her parents and daughter, include two sisters, Mrs. John R. Conwell, Jr., of Franklin and Mrs. John D. Stanley II of Smithfield; and five brothers, Calvin R. Wise of Goldsboro, N.C., Elmer O. Wise of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Marvin R. Wise of Carrsville, Vance R. Wise of Augusta, Ga., and Charles D. Wise of Engle, Wis. A son of Emmett Lee Glover and the late Mrs. Peggy Story Glover, the husband was a native of Franklin and a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Surviving, besides his father and daughter, are a brother, James C. Glover of Franklin, and four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Glover Hand, Mrs. Barham Glover Britt and Mrs. Angela Glover Kreech of Franklin and Mrs. Inez Donaldson of Williamstown, N.J. A double funeral service was conducted at W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Edwin C. Thornton, Jr., of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and Rev. C.W. McKay of Church of God. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers for Franklin Glover were Jimmy Duck, Jimmy Kotel, David Munford, D.L. Padgett, C.C. Daughtrey, Willie Person.
