Dr. Gilbert was stricken down while at his post of duty, working on a bunch of hogs belonging to R.B. Jernigan. It was soon found that he had an incurable disease, and his life was only a matter of a few weeks. He was 39 years old. Dr. Gilbert came to Courtland, a young man, in July 1922, a stranger, but very soon he began to endear himself in the hearts of his fellowmen. He united with the Methodist Church at Courtland and became very active in its work. He was president of the Men's Bible Class of the Methodist Church during 1936. He was an active Christian, most liberal in his contributions and a lover of Christian service. When the church and the Men's Bible Class wanted anything done, Dr. Gilbert was ever ready. Dr. Gilbert was held in very high esteem by the professional world. He was president of the Veterinary Medical Association of Virginia in 1937, a post of honor and duty. Few people could give better service in his profession than Dr. Gilbert. He was ever ready to answer calls from the poorest to the best, never questioning whether he would be paid or not. Dr. Gilbert was born in Stuart, Patrick County, May 6, 1900, the son of the late George W. Gilbert and Mrs. Elizabeth Gilbert. After completing his local schooling, he graduated from the United States Veterinary College, Washington, D.C., in June 1922, coming to this county the following months.
