All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JESSE ALBION GILES Jesse Albion Giles, 76, husband of Mrs. Florence Culler Giles of Franklin died in Raiford Memorial Hospital died early Sunday morning, September 23, following a stroke sustained on Friday September 14. Mr. Giles was the son of the late Rev. Jesse L. and Nancy Jane York Giles of Randolph County, N.C. He was a graduate of Davidson College and the law school of Wake Forest College. For some years he was a law partner of the late Judge R.H. Sykes of Durham, N.C. He served as state legislator, district attorney of western North Carolina, and postmaster of Durham from 1912 to 1916. Later he practiced law in Hillsboro and Chapel Hill. After retiring from active practice he made his home in Franklin. Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Stanley T. Holland of Franklin, Mrs. William R. Sowers of Cambridge, Md. and Mrs. Fred Boyer of Roswell, N. Mex.; three sons, W. Everett Giles of Winston-Salem, N.C., Dr. J.A. Giles, Jr. of Wilmington, Del, and Maj. Robert T. Giles, USAF, London, England; 13 grandchildren and four great-grand children; one sister, Mrs. Orin Calloway of High Point, N.C.; and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery on Monday morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson and John M. Gessell. Active pallbearers were Vaughan Beale, George R. Brown, Everett R. Bryant, Joe Gay Bryant, Dr. J.W. Lambdin, J. Earl McGowan, J. Edward Moyler and L.B. Norfleet.
