GILLETTE DIES SUDDENLY IN COURTLAND HOME The wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Southampton and adjoining counties was shocked to hear of the sudden death on Saturday afternoon, December 18, of James Thomas Gillette, 67, prominent attorney and former Mayor, who succumbed to a heart attack at his home in Courtland. The deceased was a son of the late William Percy and Ella Victoria Pope Gillette of Southampton County and the husband of Mrs. Carlynne Perrow Gillette of Courtland, who survives him. A member of the Methodist Church since his youth, Jim Gillette had been a steward in the Courtland Methodist Church for the past 40 years, and had served as superintendent of its Sunday School. He was a generous giver to the church of both his time and his means; and in the campaign to raise funds for the construction of a new church building he took a leading part. For many years he was the teacher of the Men's bible class. Some months ago he was honored by the Virginia Methodist Advocate with selection as "Layman of the Week." After attending Franklin Military Academy he graduated from Randolph-Mason College in 1910. For his law education, he attended the University of Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar Association and of the Southampton County Bar Association. Noted for his athletic ability, Jim was an outstanding football player at both Randolph-Mason and the University; and he never lost his interest in football and sports of all kinds. This interest he concentrated on the football teams of Courtland High school, several of which made distinguished records under his tutelage. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Walter Shearin of Smithfield and Miss Bettie Frances Gillette of Falls Church; three sons, Robert Turnbull Gillette of Hampton, James Thomas Gillette, Jr., of Forest and Joseph Perrow Gillette of Courtland; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Gillette Dodson of Norfolk and Misses Kate and Mary Gillette of Capron; and two brothers, William Percy Gillette, Jr., of Capron and Edward Franklin Gillette of Suffolk. Funeral services for Mr. Gillette were held in the Courtland Methodist Church on Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. C.A. McCormick, Jr., pastor of the church, officiated, assisted by Rev. O.L. Gilliam of Mathews and Rev. E.R. Collie of Palmyra, former pastors and Dr. R. Orman Bryant, superintendent of the Portsmouth district of the Virginia Conference. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery near the church he loved so well. Active pallbearers were T.B. Bell, G. Leroy Bryant, Caleb R. Everett, Terry P. Gilbert, T.Asbury Gillette, W.T. Joyner, Leroy Magette, Wilbur J. Manry, Churchill G. Ridley, and Roland Vaughan. Honorary pallbearers were the Men's Bible Class of the Courtland Baptist Church...
