GILLETTE DIES IN CITY OF NEW YORK John Kindred Gillette, veteran Astoria New York, attorney, died July 10 at Dr. Barnes' Sanitarium in Stamford, Conn. He had been in failing health for nearly two years and had gone to the sanitarium three weeks ago. Born in Southampton County, Virginia, 60 years ago, Mr. Gillette came to Queens when he was 17 years old. He was graduated from the old Bryant High School, then attended New York Law School, graduating in 1910. His practice was largely before the Surrogate's Court and he also specialized in real estate and tax work. He was one of the comparatively few attorneys in the borough qualified for practice before the United States Supreme Court. At one time an ardent tennis player and golfer, he was treasurer of the Jackson Heights Tennis Club several years ago. He also was a Mason, serving as an officer of Advance Lodge, Astoria, and at one time was superintendent of the Sunday school of the Astoria Methodist Church. A native of Courtland, Virginia, the son of the late James Ezra Gillette and Mrs. Lucy Magette Gillette, he was also a nephew of the late Dr. John J. Kindred, a native of Courtland and a Congressman for his district in New York. He is survived by two brothers, James E. Gillette of New York and George W. Gillette of Accomac County, two sisters, Mrs. J. Ashby Turner of Richmond and Mrs. Nettie Williams, besides a number of nephews and nieces. The body was brought to Courtland where funeral services were conducted from the Courtland Methodist Church by the pastor, Rev. W.W. Beasley, last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The church choir sang "Abide with Me" and Mrs. C.W. Parker and Mrs. T.P. Gilbert sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Burial was made in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, the pallbearers being Mr. Gillette's nephews; Edgar and Gillette Turner of Richmond, W.M., Ryan, John and Joseph Williams of Danville.
