Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late William Richard and Tena Raiford Galtress. He was a retired machine tender with Union Camp Corporation. He was a member of Sedley Baptist Church and a charter member of the Sedley Hunt Club. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Allie Harrell Galtress; three daughters, Marjorie G. Webster and her husband, Daniel, of Richlands, N.C., Lois G. McCourt of Hopewell and Jacqueline G. Bradshaw of Courtland; a son, William J. Galtress Sr. and his wife, Jean, of Zuni; four sisters, Martha Duke of Colonial Heights, Dorothy Denson of Suffolk, Jean Vaughan of Franklin and Lillian Travis of Wakefield; two brothers, Thomas Galtress of Franklin and George Galtress of Carrsville; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Adams and Mabel Arrington, and two brothers, Henry Galtress and Norman Boykin. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggests that memorials be made to the Sedley Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 89, Sedley, VA 23878 or to the Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 449, Courtland, VA 23837. ****************************************************************************** R.
