Gilliam died at his home in Second avenue, Franklin Thursday morning, February 3, in his fifty-eighth year, following a long illness caused by a stroke of paralysis sustained in February, 1919. Mr. Gilliam was a native of Southampton county and was one of our town's most highly esteemed citizens. He was a partner of W.T. Pace during the period of his first residence in our town, and had been foreman of Mr. Pace's tin shop for a number of years. He was a simple and unostentatious citizen, but a man of sterling character and integrity and a consistent and useful Christian, a member of High Street M.E. Church and one of its stewards for several years. He was a member of the local Masonic, Pythian and Odd Fellow fraternities, and served the town acceptably as its recorder some years ago. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Nettie Harris of this county; by two daughters, Mrs. Wallace Fox of Norfolk and Miss Clair Gilliam of this town; one son, Edward F. Gilliam of this place; one brother, Mr. J.R. Gilliam, of Handsom, and one sister Mrs. John Barnes of Newsoms.
