Gary, well-known to many Franklin people for a long period of years, died in Danville, Va., on November 16, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.L.H. Johnson, and was buried here Sunday afternoon with services conducted from High Street Methodist Church by the Rev. B.B. Bland, assisted by Dr. Thos. R. Reeves of Martinsville, a former pastor of this church and a close personal friend of the Gary family. Mr. Gary, who was 82 years of age, was born in Albemarle County, Va., the son of the late Rev. H.H. Gary; lived at Pope, this county, for a few years, and was cashier for the Camp Manufacturing Company here for nearly 30 years. He was a valuable citizen of our town, serving both on the Town Council and School Board at various times, and was prominent in the work of the Methodist Church, being a steward in that organization and a teacher of the women’s class of its Sunday school. He was educated at Randolph-Macon College and was keenly interested in the work of the Pythian order while a citizen of Franklin. He is survived by three sons, Hartwell and Julian Gary of Norfolk and Walker Gary of Greensboro, N.D.; by two daughters, Mrs. G.L.H. Johnson of Danville and Mrs. G.T. Following impressive rites at the church, burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being his three sons, two sons-in-law, and George H. Parker, E.T. Fitzgerald and Harry Steinhardt.
